How much does a pilot license cost?

The average cost to obtain a sport pilot license is between $6,000 and $10,000.

The average cost to obtain a private pilot license is between $9,000 and $17,000.

How long does it take to get a sport pilot license?

Several factors, including your personal learning abilities, motor skills, and schedule availability will dictate how long it takes to obtain your sport pilot license. Some students pass with as little as 25 hours of flight time, while others need 60 or more hours. At an average of 30 hours of flight time, you can earn your sport pilot license in as little as three weeks!

Can I “self study” to save money?

Most of the aeronautical knowledge “ground school” portion of your training can be accomplished through instructional DVDs and online courses. While nothing beats one-on-one learning with a Certified Flight Instructor, if you have the proper discipline and study skills, you can save up to 80% on the ground portion of your FAA sport pilot certificate. The more you study on your own, the less expensive your training will be, and the faster you will earn your pilot certificate!

Seaplane or not?

If you are looking for fun, there is nothing more thrilling than earning your wings in a seaplane! The hourly rental cost of a seaplane, however, is roughly twice the cost of a conventional fixed-gear “land” plane.
